Oscar contender “Precious” was the big winner at the 41st NAACP Image Awards on Friday, with the film’s star Gabourey Sidibe landing an Outstanding Actress accolade.

The spotlight was on “Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire” as Mo’Nique picked up the Outstanding Supporting Actress honor, moviemaker Lee Daniels was named Outstanding Director and Geoffrey Fletcher took home the Outstanding Writing trophy.

Elsewhere, Morgan Freeman was named Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture for his portrayal of Nelson Mandela in “Invictus,” and he acknowledged production partner Clint Eastwood in his acceptance speech.

Filmmaker Tyler Perry was handed the annual Chairman’s Award in recognition of his humanitarian efforts, while his sitcom Tyler Perry’s House of Payne won Outstanding Comedy Series for the third consecutive year.

Maxwell and Mary J. Blige were named Outstanding Male and Female Artist, while Keri Hilson was the recipient of the Outstanding New Artist trophy.

Wyclef Jean’s tireless fundraising efforts for earthquake-stricken Haiti also earned him a top honor, the Vanguard Award, from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

Guillermo del Toro’s next directorial project has been the subject of much speculation for a while, and now Deadline is reporting that the Hellboy and Pan’s Labyrinth director witll tackle a dream project of his (and of legions of horror readers): H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountians of Madness.

The adaptation of the 1931 novella about an Antarctic expedition’s encounters with an unknown menace in the ruins of a lost civilization will reportedly be a big-ticket production for Universal (with whom del Toro worked on the Hellboy films) shot in 3-D and produced by none other than James Cameron. If all goes as planned (and as reported), filming will begin next summer. Could that mean a release in the summer of 2012? The timing of the doomsday prognostications coupled with the Lovecraftian “Great Old Ones” mythos certainly seems appropriate.

I for one look forward to seeing Lovecraft’s nightmarish visions given a blockbuster treatment without the budgetary constraints that have hampered so many previous adatpations. It will be equally intriguing to see if del Toro can make Lovecraft’s dense, dark, psychological themes accessible to the masses.

In the late 19th century the union suit, (also colloquially known as long johns), was in its hey day, worn across America and northern parts of Europe. Popular throughout class and generation, this modest knitted one-piece covered the whole body, from the neck to the wrists and ankles. The designs pièce de résistance featured a drop flap in the back for ease of use in the old outhouse. As cotton became more and more widely available, underwear manufacturers seized the moment to create an alternative to this mainstay and rather cumbersome design. Knitted material is difficult to cut and sew seams and thus with cotton a radical shift towards mass-made fashion could begin.

In Europe times were changing, as the Americans continued to sweat and itch, a simple “T-shaped” template was cut twice from a piece of cotton cloth and the two pieces faced and stitched together in a lowly European workhouse. It was half a pair of long johns, but it soon took on a life of its own. As the Industrial Revolution reached its inevitable conclusion, Henry T. During World War II the T-shirt was finally issued as standard underwear for all ranks in both the U.S. Army and the Navy. Although the T-shirt was intended as underwear, soldiers performing strenuous battle games or construction work, and especially those based in warmer climes would often wear an uncovered T-shirt. On July the 13th, 1942, the cover story for Life magazine features a photo of a soldier wearing a T-shirt with the text “Air Corps Gunnery School”.
